Frontier Aromatherapy
Tea Tree Oil
Tea
Tree Oil is an essential oil distilled from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca Alternifoia
tree. Tea Tree is a powerful anti-bacterial, antiseptic and anti-fungal. It is very useful
for minor skin problems.
First Aid Kit in a Bottle
Tea Tree Oil is great to have in your first aid kit. It can be applied directly
to cuts and scratches to prevent infection. Or applied to the skin to prevent or treat acne,
cold sores or fungal infections. It can even be used to reduce itching from insect bites.
A few drops may seem very little but all oils are extremely potent and concentrated.
Using more than the recommended amount may result in an adverse response, e.g. too much
relaxant may produce irritation and anxiety. Keep out of reach of children. Dilute properly.
Avoid if pregnant. People with epilepsy should avoid. People taking anticoagulants or drugs
that cause drowsiness should use lavender with caution. Lavender is not taken by mouth.
For external use only.

Tea Tree oil has been used by the native people of Australia for thousands of years. It was 'discovered' by the famous English explorer James Cook who used it as a tea. Teatree Oil is spicy, warm, volatile and medicinal. It blends well with rosemary, lavandin and nutmeg.
Tea Tree also known as Melaleuca Alternifolia is in the Myrtaceae family. It is native to Northern New South Wales, Australia. The oil is found in the leaves. Tea Tree grows very fast so it is not in danger of being over cultivated. It can be drunk as a dilute tea or as a concentrated oil used topically. Tea Tree oil is a very strong bactericide that kills a wide variety of bacteria and fungus. It is safe to use on healthy tissue.
Tea Tree oil contains chemicals known as terpenoids. These kill fungi and bacteria including some resistant to antibiotics. One study found a topical solution of 5% tea tree oil helped people with acne as much as benzoylperoxide with less side effects. It's also effective as an antibacterial shampoo.
Another study found 100% tea tree oil applied to toe nails was as good as the antifungal clotrimazole for people with athlete’s foot. Solutions of 5% tea tree oil can safely be used as a mouthwash. Because TeaTree oil is a solvent, it penetrates into the skin reaching difficult area in the fingernails and toenails.
