Aromatherapy - Essential Oils for Wellness
Essential Oils versus Fragrance OilsAromatherapy essential oils are not to be confused with fragrance oils, however. Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. They carry the concentrated essence of the plant. Fragrance or perfumed oils, on the other hand, are synthetically based and lack therapeutic benefits.Further, not all aromatherapy essential oils are the same. Organic essential oils are created from pesticide-free plants. There is some debate whether pesticides carry over into the distillation of essential oils, but most experts agree the quality of organic essential oils is superior. With no risk of pesticide-based toxins, organic essential oils are the best source of pure, effective health benefits. Using Essential OilsEssential oils are very powerful and concentrated. They must be handled safely and should never be applied to the skin in an undiluted form. Aromatherapy essential oils are often mixed with carrier oils, such as apricot kernel oil, sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil. Carrier oils safely dilute essential oils and neither evaporate nor impart any aroma. Carrier oils simply make essential oil use safe without sacrificing any benefits.There are two methods of using essential, or aromatherapy oils, absorption or inhalation. Essential oils, blended with a carrier oil, may be applied directly to the skin for absorption. This method transports the oil's properties directly into the bloodstream. Typically, an essential oil is heated using a diffuser for inhalation. In this method, the healthful properties of the essential oil enters via the lungs and are absorbed into the bloodstream. How Does Aromatherapy Work?Essential oils are believed to offer both physical and psychological benefits. As plant properties vary, so do the specific benefits of aromatherapy essential oils. Absorbed essential oils are believed to produce physical benefits. Inhaled aromas from essential oils are believed to stimulate the brain, triggering an emotional reaction. Aromatherapy oils do not have to be used alone. Essential oils can be blended to provide a specific therapeutic action, or pleasing aroma.
