All About Coral Calcium

That calcium intake is an important part of a balanced diet is common knowledge. You may be surprised to discover that dairy products are neither the only, nor best source of calcium for your body. A particularly rich source of calcium, in fact, is the Coral Calcium supplement.

Where Does Coral Calcium Come From?

Coral Calcium is carefully extracted from the Sango coral reefs located near Okinawa, Japan. The mining operation, while protecting the living coral, extracts, pulverizes and treats Sango coral sand, enriched with coral calcium, magnesium, valuable minerals and trace minerals of the sea. The coral is processed into capsules.

Coral Calcium, when taken as a nutritional supplement, raises the body's pH level to a healthy alkaline state, and provides significant calcium absorption.

Calcium Benefits

While most of us know calcium is a mineral important to good bone health, it also effects your general health. Sufficient calcium intake has been linked to lowering cancer risk, fighting off osteoporosis, preventing high blood pressure, promoting heart health, reducing the risk of stroke, and lowered incidence of periodontal disease.

How Much Calcium is Enough?

The RDA (recommended daily allowance) for calcium is 1,000 to 1,300 milligrams, up to 2,500 mg daily. Most of our diets do not approach even the lower recommended values, however. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, roughly 90% of adult women, 80% of teenage girls, 73% of adult men, 68% of teenage boys, and 30% of children five and under do not take in enough calcium in their diet.

Calcium Absorption

Increasing your intake of calcium is just part of the picture. It is a particularly difficult mineral to absorb unless the conditions are right. Further, calcium is available in many forms, but not all are equal. Some compounds contain higher levels of calcium and are better absorbed. A quick comparison of calcium provided by dietary intake and nutritional supplement shows a striking difference.

  • calcium carbonate - 40% calcium, 40 mg usable calcium
  • tribasic calcium phosphate - 39% calcium, 39 mg usable calcium
  • calcium lactate - 33% calcium, 122 mg usable calcium
  • calcium citrate - 21% calcium, 105 mg usable calcium
  • coral calcium - 24% calcium, 228 mg usable calcium

Many common calcium supplements are elemental which is more difficult to digest and absorb. The Coral Calcium supplement, on the other hand, is ionic. This means it contains tiny, positively charged particle of calcium, providing easier digestion and absorption.

Calcium Issues

If sodium intake is a concern in your diet, the levels found in Coral Calcium are appropriate for your needs. Coral Calcium actually contains only 18.2 PPM (parts per million). This is a lower sodium level that of drinking water!

As discussed earlier, adequate levels of vitamin D must be present for the absorption of calcium and storage in the bones. Without enough vitamin D, less than 10% of dietary calcium can be absorbed. Fortunately, this critical vitamin is included in each Coral Calcium formulation to insure the highest level of absorption.

Your diet and general health may also effect your ability to absorb calcium. Impaired calcium absorption may occur as a result of large amounts of fat, oxalic acid (found in chocolate and rhubarb), and phytic acid (found in grains) in your diet.

Calcium deficiency is caused by contraceptive pills, anti-epileptic drugs, diuretics, corticosteroids for rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and IBD, and some antidepressants. Deficiency can also be created by smoking, lactose intolerance and absorption disorders such as coeliac disease.

Clearly, calcium plays a significant role in your overall health. The typical diet, however, does not include an adequate amount of this important mineral. Because calcium is difficult to absorb, changes in your diet may not be enough. A nutritional supplement, high in calcium and easily absorbed, such as Coral Calcium, is the best insurance for your health.
