During their research they've made a surprising discovery. Even though green tea contains caffeine, it changes neither energy expenditure nor heart rate significantly. This is very unusual for caffeinated foods. Researchers concluded that green tea can promote safe, natural weight loss. Compared to most obesity prescription drugs, or herbal products like ephedra, which can raise heart rates and blood pressure, and are not recommended for those sensitive to stimulants, green tea or green tea extract is a safe alternative. There is also clear evidence that green tea's polyphenols (EGCG) depress levels of leptin. This is a protein produced by fats which contributes to how the body manages fat storage. Lower leptin levels decrease the appetite. It means you feel full sooner, and can consume less.

The secret of green tea weight loss is the high concentrations of catechin polyphenols found in green tea. These compounds intensify fat oxidation and thermogenesis. Thermogenesis occurs when the body generates heat by burning fuels, such as fat. In a nutshell, this means fat processing becomes more efficient.

Green tea also has an effect on the body's overall metabolism. It slows the release of carbohydrates into the blood stream, preventing sharp increases of insulin. Insulin helps transform fatty acids into molecules which are then stored as fat droplets. With the metabolism operating evenly and insulin levels kept under control, fat is burned rather than "locked" in the fat cells.

Even small amounts of green tea or green tea extract make a difference to the metabolism. Drinking a single cup daily, or taking green tea extract promotes the burning of about an extra 78 calories. This adds up to over 28,000 calories in a year or about 8 extra pounds.

While green tea is not an overnight miracle cure for obesity, or excess weight, its properties do contribute to a healthier metabolism. Green tea weight loss is a safe, effective, natural alternative. There is no prescription is required, and no harsh side effects, but green tea can help control and maintain weight.
