Peppermint oil contains the healing volatile compound menthol as well as menthone, menthyl acetate and 40 other ingredients.

Peppermint oil is made by crushing the leaves and stems and then steam-distilling them. The leaves are collected right before the light-purple flowers appear in the summer.

Peppermint oil is a muscle relaxant and is very soothing to the digestive tract. Many commercial antacids contain it. It can relieve muscle aches and inflammation of the nasal passages.

To add a minty taste it is found in toothpaste and breath fresheners. It may even reduce headaches by applying it to the forehead and temple along with eucalyptus oil and ethanol. Peppermint is a popular, soothing tea.
